Moving to the Netherlands

0 / 10 steps done

Around the date

  1. Register at your municipality

Required within 5 days if you will stay at least four months. Book the appointment before you arrive; bring your passport, rental contract and legalised birth certificate if asked.

  2. Receive your BSN

Your citizen service number comes with registration. Give it to your employer straight away so you are not taxed at the highest rate.

  3. Open a Dutch bank account

Most employers pay salary only to a Dutch IBAN.

    Banking in the Netherlands →
  4. Apply for DigiD

Your login for the tax office, allowances and most government websites. The activation code comes by post.

Afterwards

  1. Register with a GP (huisarts)

Do it before you need one: many practices have waiting lists.

  2. Check which allowances you can claim

Healthcare and rent allowance are not automatic and do not depend on nationality.

    Benefits checker →
  3. Take out Dutch health insurance

Within four months of starting to live or work here. Cover is backdated, and so are the premiums.

    Healthcare in the Netherlands →
  4. Apply for the 30% ruling (if recruited from abroad)

Together with your employer, within four months of starting work, so it applies from day one.

    The 30% ruling →
  5. Exchange your driving licence (non-EU)

A non-EU licence is valid for 185 days after registering. Exchange it, or pass the Dutch test, before then.

    Exchanging your licence →
  6. File your first tax return (M-form)

For your arrival year you file an M-form instead of a normal return, due 1 July of the following year.

Deadlines are the general rules from rijksoverheid.nl, UWV, SVB, KVK and the Belastingdienst, counted in calendar days from the date you enter. Some depend on your contract, municipality or nationality, and "working days" deadlines (such as registering a birth) are shown as calendar days. Always check the organisation's own page before a deadline.
