Weather and seasons

Wind

The country is flat and close to the sea: cycling into a headwind is a national experience.

Changeable

Four seasons in one day is a cliché for a reason. Rain is spread across the whole year.

Mild

Winters are rarely very cold and summers rarely very hot, though heatwaves have become more common.

Long summer evenings

Around midsummer it stays light until after 22:00.

  1. Spring
    Tulips and terraces

From March the bulbs bloom and cafés put out their terraces at the first sunshine.

  2. Summer
    Beaches and festivals

Long days, outdoor festivals and swimming in lakes and the sea.

  3. Autumn
    Storms and cosy evenings

Windy, wet and colourful; the season for stamppot and gezelligheid.

  4. Winter
Short days and hope for ice

It gets dark around 16:30 in December. Everyone dreams of natural ice for skating.

A country made against the water

Infographic: how much of the Netherlands lies below sea level
26% of the land is below sea level and 59% is vulnerable to flooding, which is why the water boards and the Delta Works matter so much.
