8Common questions

Do I have to apply?

Usually not. If you get kinderbijslag, the Belastingdienst starts it automatically when your income allows. If you got nothing but think you qualify, apply in Mijn toeslagen.

Can I get it as an expat?

Yes, with a valid residence permit and kinderbijslag for the child, if your income and savings are under the limits.

What happens when my child turns 18?

It stops. From 18 your child may get student finance or their own allowances.

Does a bonus reduce it?

Yes: it raises your income for the year. Update your estimate in Mijn toeslagen to avoid paying back.
