Unemployment benefit (WW)

WW from the UWV is taxed as income in Box 1; the UWV withholds payroll tax. If you also get income from a new job in the same year, make sure only one applies the tax credits, or expect to pay some tax back.

Transition payment and severance

A transition payment (transitievergoeding) or severance is taxed as salary, usually at the special payroll tax rate. The final tax is settled in your return, where it adds to your income for the year.

Benefits

A lower income can mean you qualify for more healthcare or rent allowance. Update your expected income in Mijn toeslagen.

For expats

  • On a highly skilled migrant permit, you usually have three months to find a new sponsoring employer. Check the conditions with the IND straight away.
  • Your 30% ruling ends when the job ends, unless you start with a new employer within three months.
